Grey Towers Festival of Wood Hotel
Here at the Hotel Fauchere, we don’t simply offer our guests the finest in Relais & Chateaux cuisine, luxury and hospitality: We also provide easy proximity to some beautiful expressions of the East’s great outdoors, not least the sublime Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area right at Milford’s doorstep, as well as heritage attractions and great shopping at our galleries, boutiques and specialty retailers.
Besides year-round recreational opportunities, you can also celebrate our region’s lovely forestlands at the Grey Towers Festival of Wood next week. It’s one of the standouts on Milford’s impressive calendar of annual festivals, and it’s held at a very appropriate venue: Grey Towers National Historic Site, the chateau-style ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, the father of the conservation movement and first director of the U.S. Forest Service.
The Festival of Wood: Focus on Silviculture, Ecology, & Conservation
Held this year on Saturday, August 5 (10 AM to 5 PM) and Sunday, August 6 (10 AM to 4 PM), the Festival of Wood functions as “a celebration of our natural and cultural heritage of wood.” With such a wide-reaching purview it’s little surprise you’ll find quite a bit of variety on tap.
The itinerary includes demos on woodcarving, chainsaw sculpture, timber framing, and tree pruning, for example, plus crosscut saw and other woodcraft activities. The Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center will be showing off some live critters in its “Wildlife in the Woods” exhibit, and there’ll be plenty of other informational displays and presentations covering everything from maple sugaring and backyard birding to Delaware River conservation and urban forestry.
Other Festival of Wood Attractions
Throw in tree walks, kid-friendly flybys from the celebrity Forest Service tag team of Smokey the Bear and Woodsy Owl, and tours of the Grey Towers mansion itself, and you’ve got a weekend’s worth of forest-focused fun right here in Milford! You’ll find food and refreshments available throughout the Festival of Wood, plus a weekend-long soundtrack of live acoustic music as well, courtesy of the Dixieland All-Stars, Dan Stevens, Brittani O’Hearn, and the duo of Petra Herceg and Cynthia Preston.
