Designer Barbara de Vries will be speaking about, and showing images from, her career as a design and art director and how her work has contributed to changes in public attitudes and consumption trends over the past thirty years, starting with the creation of the CK label for Calvin Klein in the early nineties, and more recently as a creator, spokeswoman, and activist for the anti-plastic-pollution movement.

In 2005, when Barbara first became aware of plastic pollution of the beaches and the oceans, there was no public consciousness of the problem. As she learned about the cause of this environmental disaster she became an early plastic pollution activist by raising awareness through her design and artwork, public speaking and education. The ever-growing wave of recognition, from broad media discourse, public engagement, and certain plastic bans, taught her that affecting change is possible and starts with individual action.

Over the past fifteen years Barbara has given a Ted talk, appeared in a Sundance movie called One Beach, worked closely with the Nature Conservancy, Barneys New York, Surfrider, Art Basel Miami, and many other institutions to raise awareness of the impacts of plastic waste in the oceans. She also conducts an education program through workshops in global coastal communities, from the Bahamas and the US East Coast to the Inner Hebrides. In 2014 she was awarded the Dutch-American Heritage Award for her contribution to the environment and her work has appeared in Vogue, The Miami Herald, on PBS and many other media platforms. She has been a Milford resident since 1987.
